The early sunsets creep in, the dark mornings linger and the abrupt change can feel like nature has turned off the lights a little too quickly. In a world moving at full tilt, the end of British Summer Time is a timely reminder to pause, reflect and cultivate mindfulness.

The Power of Being Present

Mindfulness - the act of being fully aware of the present moment without judgement - is more than a wellness trend but a lifeline through seasonal transitions. Mindfulness can anchor us. When the clocks change, our body’s circadian rhythms are thrown off balance.

This shift is enough to impact our mood, focus and quality of sleep. Approaching this period with awareness and intention can help ease the shock and transition more gently into the winter months.

Mindfulness Tips for Navigating the Clock Change

1 - Start adjusting early

A few days before the clocks change, try to adjust your sleep and waking times to help your internal clock adjust gradually.

2 - Maintain a morning ritual

As the mornings darken, it is tempting to linger in bed for longer. Create a ritual that gets you up and out of bed, be it with a cup of tea or a morning stretch. These small acts signal your mind and body that it’s time to begin your day.

3 - Use natural light wisely

Natural light is the best way to regulate your internal clock. Getting outside within an hour of waking, even under cloud, is beneficial to your body and mind. In evenings, try to reduce screen time and bright lights to help prepare for sleep.

4 - Check in with yourself daily

Transitions can stir up unexpected emotions such as restlessness and sadness. Take moments pause throughout the day to check in with yourself and your feelings. Naming these experiences can help reduce overwhelming feelings.

5 - Embrace the season

Slow down this autumn. Instead of longing for summer months, let yourself settle into the beauty of the season and the new changes and rhythms it brings.

The changing clocks can feel disruptive, but it serves as an opportunity to embrace new changes, appreciate the nature around us and reflect on how we live. Use this shift as a seasonal reset - a chance to realign with ourselves.

So, as the clocks fall back on Sunday 26 October, let it be more than just a mechanical ritual. Let it be a mindful moment.
