At its core, strength training (also referred to as resistance training) is any exercise that uses resistance to build muscle strength and endurance.
Resistance can be found in a variety of sources, from free weights, weighted machines, resistance bands, to body weights. Unlike cardio exercises, which focus on increasing your heart rate and improving your aerobic fitness, strength training focuses on building muscular strength and endurance by challenging your muscles to work harder than they typically would.
A common misconception of strength training is that it is only beneficial for those wanting to body build. This form of training can mean anything from using your own body weight in the form of squats and push-ups to using moderate weights such as dumbbells.
How does strength training work?
The principle behind strength training involves progressive overload, meaning gradually increasing the amount of resistance your muscles work against over time. Lifting weights or completing resistance exercises causes tiny micro-tears to form in your muscles. During recovery, these repair and grow your muscles. This action is only beneficial when you allow your body to recover from exercising & overexertion without rest can lead to injury and can have negative effects on your health and wellbeing.
Health benefits of strength training
Long-term health
Immediate results and effects of strength training can be clear, but long-term health rewards are of greater significance. Regular and consistent strength training can benefit functional independence as you age, preserving muscle mass and strength, as well as improving your longevity and quality of life through bettering your overall health.
Getting Started
Strength training doesn't have to be intimidating or daunting. We have compiled some simple steps to help get you started.
1. Start light - Be sure not to overload the body by attempting to lift weights that are too heavy. Be sure to build up your strength using body weights and lighter weights first before incrementally increasing. Remember, lighter weights still have beneficial results on your body.
2. Concentrate on form - To avoid injury and to maximise results, proper form is crucial. We recommend booking sessions with our personal training team, who will guide you on best exercise practise and ensure your form is correct to avoid injury down the line.
3. Keep consistent - Developing a solid routine will help to build up your muscles and see results quicker. Remember, rest and recovery are just as important as the training, so allow yourself time in between workouts.
4. Integrate into workouts - Aim for balanced workouts, combining cardio exercises for your aerobic health, strength training for muscular growth and flexibility/mobility.
5. Don't be afraid to ask for help - Embarking on a new fitness journey can seem like a daunting task, but our team is here to help introduce you and provide you with the foundational stepping stones you need to achieve your goals. If you have any questions about exercises, don't be afraid to ask for help. It is always better to get correct information rather than making avoidable mistakes and causing injury.
Strength training isn't ust about building muscle; it involves building a strong foundation for overall health and wellbeing. From boosting mental health to improving physical strength, the benefits are clear.
If you are interested in finding out about strength training and practical implementation into your workouts, our personal training team is on hand to help you kickstart your routine, learn fitness techniques and introduce strength workouts into your normal routine to help make you the stronger version of yourself.
