The Perfect Solution to our Dog Waste Problem

Locking in your dog’s waste keeps everyone happy and healthy – including the environment. Single use plastic poo bags are adding to the problem of landfill – even the compostable ones take time to decompose and many dog owners are reluctant to have a negative impact on the environment however much they love their pooch.

With dogs in the UK producing more than 1000 tonnes of poo every day, this is an issue that is not easy to ignore. Dog waste can contain harmful pathogens such as E coli so owners, together with the wider community, don’t want to come across it in parks, gardens, forests or on pavements. Sadly, some dog owners think that by buying biodegradable bags, they can simply leave them hanging on a tree or lying on the edge of a field in the countryside to break down, but this often doesn’t happen or would take many years to complete.

Even dog owners with the best intentions who dispose of their poo bags responsibly may not have considered the environmental impact the making of the bags has on our climate since a lot of energy is used to make the bags in the first place.

Some owners then rely on what’s called the ‘stick and flick’ method, simply hoping that the dog waste can be moved into the undergrowth to decompose naturally but studies have shown that this can drastically alter the biodiversity of the local environment by over-fertilizing the soil leading to over-production of weeds such as hogweed and nettles.
