Forest Adventures return for the summer

The Goodwood Education Trust is once again offering Forest Adventures for children aged 5 – 11 through the West Sussex summer holidays.

The Goodwood Education Trust is once again offering Forest Adventures for children aged 5 – 11 through the West Sussex summer holidays. Running for 3 days a week over 5 weeks, children will have the opportunity to try natural arts and crafts, such as shelter building, campfire starting and cooking, den building and woodland exploration. Feedback from past participants shows that children (and their parents) really value the time spent outdoors, trying new activities, meeting new friends and gaining confidence. The Education Trust facilities, including inspirational outdoor learning spaces, a nature trail, 20 acres of semi-ancient woodland and a grazing meadow, offer the perfect location for adventurers big and small.

This year, for the first time, the Goodwood Education Trust is offering places through the Holiday, Activity and Food (HAF) programme. The HAF programme is fully funded by the Department for Education and offers children who are entitled to benefits related free school meals the opportunity to attend participating holiday activity clubs and have a free meal. The HAF programme has a number of aims, including that children will eat healthily and be active during the school holidays, take part in engaging and enriching activities that support the development of resilience, character and wellbeing along with their wider educational attainment and be safe and not be socially isolated.

It is coordinated locally by West Sussex County Council, with 60 providers across the County. There is a significant need as 19,000 children are eligible for Free School Meals in West Sussex, and the charity Childwise says 25% of all children will face food insecurity in the summer holidays.  

Catherine Cannon, Trust Manager, said, ‘We are delighted to have been chosen by West Sussex County Council as a provider for HAF for Summer 2023. It is an important programme for us, to increase our social impact as a charity and raise our profile of what we can offer to children and families who may face barriers to spending time in nature.’ As of today, almost 60% of the places available at Goodwood have been filled, which is fantastic for the first year of participation, and shows the hidden need in the Chichester District.
