Lamborghini confirms an EV is coming

Is the day Lamborghini announces an all-electric model, along with the outline for its electrification strategy, a dark one? Not entirely. Whatever your thoughts, the Raging Bull spilling its plans for the next five years or more is big news. Let’s get into it.

The big goal is for Lamborghini is to cut the emissions of its fleet by 50 per cent by the beginning of 2025. It will do so with increasing electrification of its range, culminating in a fourth EV-only model joining the line-up in the second half of the decade. Before that, the marque’s first hybrid series production car in 2023 before the entire range is electrified by the end of 2024.

Driving the push to electrification will be an unprecedented investment of €1.5 billion over the next four years, the largest in the company’s history. We expect the first series-production hybrid Lamborghini that’s debuting in 2023 to be the Aventador’s replacement, which is rumoured to retain the V12 while employing hybrid assistance. A hybridised variant of the Urus is also a dead cert but whether the Huracan lives to be hybridised or simply replaced, remains to be seen.

As for that fourth model in the range? It could be anything. If you look to the rest of the VW Group, Porsche is preparing an all-electric Macan. Likewise, Audi has hinted heavily that whatever follows the R8 will be EV-only. Or, Lamborghini could go its own route and re-introduce a grand touring car to follow in the footsteps of the Espada for the all-electric age. Either way, full electrification is coming to Sant’Agata, just as it is everyone everywhere else.

Don’t think that Lamborghinis, as we know and love them, will go quietly, however. Both 2021 and 2022 are earmarked as years to “celebrate the combustion engine”, with two new V12 models due before the end of this year. “This phase will be characterized by the development of combustion engines for versions that pay homage to the brand’s glorious history and iconic products past and present,” so reads the marque’s release. We look forward to seeing whatever comes of that.
