Video: Porsche 911 GT3 Cup dominates track day

What is the ultimate track day car? It’s a question both enthusiasts and car companies have spent millions trying to answer and, where the latter is concerned, create the answer. But the truth is that no matter what you do to a road legal car, it will be compromised. If you’re serious, buy an (often cheaper) race car, get a trailer and a tow rig and live your best life. Today’s video proves the point.

We find ourselves at Virginia International Raceway with Black World Motorsports and their Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. In terms of the engine, it’s a car that differs very little from the road-going 911 GT3 RS, save for some emissions control devices perhaps. No, it doesn’t have the active aero, or the simplified adjustable suspension or some of the creature comforts. But it does have the adjustable suspension, safety equipment, lightweighting and strengthening of a bonafide race car. Because it is a bonafide race car.

And as we can see, the difference in performance on-track is night and day. Car after car is dispatched by driver Wyatt Foster as he slings the GT3 Cup around VIR, with the driver often having to warm the tyres to bring them up to the window, because traffic is consistently slowing him down to the point of being out of it.

Considering a McLaren Senna for a track car? Hold that thought. Unless you simply must be able to drive your track car on the road, consider a much cheaper old McLaren 650S GT3, a trailer and a tow car. You’ll get so much more of a race car experience out of it because obviously, it is a race car. If the restricted performance is an issue? Get it unrestricted, or more likely, learn to actually drive the car to its maximum potential with the performance it has.
