Video: The incredible classic car and rally collection hidden in the Italian countryside
If you leave Turin and take the motorway south the countryside is pretty unremarkable. If you take an exit after about 40 minutes you’ll find yourself in a pretty unremarkable small business estate. But inside it hides something amazing – a hidden collection of rally cars.
This is the collection of Gino Macaluso, the rally navigator turned watch trader who helped introduce Fiat to the world of off-road motorsport. Over his life Gino collected some incredible cars (including Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Miura, Mercedes 300 SL, Ligier JS11) but the most important in his eyes were the rally cars. Macaluso sought to collect the world’s most important rally cars, to build an important collection of rally history and to keep them in perfect running order.
Sadly Gino passed away in 2010, but his mantle was taken up by his sons, and today his collection has been housed in the stunning surroundings of the Fondazione Gino Macaluso per’ lAuto Storica. Sitting in purpose built garages in this sleepy area of Piedmont, the Fondazione is equipped with a garage, staffed by Gino’s most trusted mechanic, and hosts not only his cars, but his office in recreation and some of his non-motoring collection.
We visited the Fondazione in September of 2019 and Gino’s son Stefano, a regular at Goodwood who has inherited his father’s love for everything rallying, explained what the collection means to him and the history of rally.
