Video: The angriest Yugo in the world
Flat out speed is great and all, but Roman roads are so passé. Today, it’s all about the mountain twisties, and this Yugo Monster has hillclimb talent by the bucketload.
In a clip so fast it appears sped up, watch as Croatian driver Dejan Kopajtic pilots his lightweight labour of love up his homeland’s Skradin Hillclimb, throwing the Fiat Bravo-engined car through bends with the pace of a pro.
Under the diminutive downforce-optimised body, 220PS (161kW) courses from the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine to the front wheels via a six-speed Sadev sequential gearbox. An incredibly low weight of just 725kg means there is nothing holding this beast back, and as a result the dynamic duo have won countless races and set dozens of hillclimb class records over the years. And after watching this incredible, screaming performance, it’s no surprise that the Yugo Monster scored a spot among the 10 fastest touring cars present at this event. Although is it a touring car? Perhaps not, but who cares. Just look at it.
Unfortunately, this was to be one of their last appearances together, with Kopajtic announcing his retirement and putting the potent little Monster up for sale. So if you’re keen to up your hillclimb game, look no further…
