Video: Remembering Richard Burns, World Rally Champion

25th November 2016
Henry Hope-Frost

Today’s date (November 25) is a bittersweet one for rally fans, particularly British ones. Happily, it marks the 15th anniversary of his becoming the only Englishman to win the World Rally Championship.

Those jubilant scenes in Margam Park in south Wales, when he took the Prodrive Subaru Impreza WRC to third in the season-finale Rally Great Britain to secure the title, are forever etched in the memories of fans.

Sadly, today also marks the anniversary of the 34-year-old’s death in 2005, aged 34, after a two-year fight with brain cancer.

This film, commissioned by the Richard Burns Foundation, the charity set up in his honour to help people with cancer and neurological issues, reflects emotionally on his life, success and the way he stoically coped with his illness.

Featuring poignant reflection from Richard’s father Alex, his then-partner Zoe and his World Championship-winning co-driver and close friend Robert Reid, interwoven with great footage of the Burns-Reid steamroller in the Mitsubishi and Subaru heyday of the late-1990s and early 2000s, it’s a fitting and, you have been warned, emotional tribute to one of Britain’s greatest motorsporting champions.
