Video: McLaren 650S GT3 fights Italian hillclimb
Hillclimbing is one of the oldest forms of motorsport. Many of us might look to Formula 1, the BTCC or IndyCar for our racing kicks nowadays, but they all need tracks, and by comparison all you need for a hillclimb is a twisty road that heads up a hill. That is why all over the world there are hillclimbs happening every week, and you’ll see lightweight single-seaters and dinky road cars hurtling up and down them. The 650S GT3, as the name suggests, was never intended to be used for hillclimbing – it was made for fast, open circuits, not tight, twisty B-road ascents. That is why we are applauding whoever decided to enter one into the 2018 FIA Hillclimb Masters race in Gubbio, Italy, back in 2018. At these very normal speeds none of the GT3’s aero will be working particularly hard, meaning the driver will have a car with loads of power and likely a decent chunk more weight than some of its competitors. It won’t break any records, but we’re very glad it competed.
