Video: This amazing F1 onboard from 1960 is like a rollercoaster ride

Despite never winning the World Championship, the Formula 1 racer was anone of the greatest drivers of all time, winning 212 of the 529 races he entered across several series, including the 1955 Mille Miglia, in which Moss and co-driver Denis Jenkinson completed the near-1,000-mile course in just 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds, maintaining an average speed of 97.96mph in their 310bhp, 2.9-litre, straight-eight Mercedes.

His talent was undeniable, and his mettle unmatched. While little onboard footage remains of his heyday, in today’s elevenses you can climb into the cockpit with Moss for this incredible open-topped, open-wheel onboard, filmed from one of the earliest ‘action cameras’ at Brands Hatch in 1960, just after it had been lengthened.

Watch as he winds his way around the circuit, the layout almost identical to the Brands that we know today, the surface and track furniture completely different.

Two minutes of epic monochrome driving is enough to convince anyone that racing 60 years ago was an entirely different sport – one of sheer fearlessness and no seatbelts…
