Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, and for many fans at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, the reason they fell in love with racing and combustion engines in the first place.

It’s fitting, then, that this year’s event hosted one of the most diverse and deep fields of F1 machinery ever assembled. Demonstrating all weekend to delight the loyal fans who swarmed the paddocks and lined the entire Goodwood Hill to catch a glimpse of iconic lumps of metal and carbon screaming by, drivers past and present revelled in their responsibilities.

Batches included Modern F1, Masters of Monaco, Grand Prix Greats, and a selection of Michael Schumacher’s weapons of choice.

The final F1 demonstration of the weekend was surely the highlight with the likes of Colin Chapman’s innovative and controversial Lotus 49B and its huge stilts wing, the beautiful and raw 1997 Schumacher Ferrari F310B – in which he so nearly clinched a title before a controversial collusion with Jacques Villeneuve – and the 2012 Championship winning Red Bull Racing-Renault RB8 all turning heads.

Then, one of Goodwood’s most touching moments took place, as Sir Jackie Stewart led a procession of his three Championship winning cars up the hill. Sir Jackie in his Matra-Cosworth MS80-02 followed by his two sons Paul and Mark driving the Tyrrell-Cosworth 003 and Tyrrell-Cosworth 006 respectively (you can see a gallery of that here). As the procession made its way up the Hill, Sir Jackie stopped at Molecomb to present his wife Helen with a single pink rose. A remarkable public showing of love and loyalty.

As we wiped away the tears, current F1 title contender Valtteri Bottas arrived in trails of tyre smoke as he dragged his brakes all the way up the Hill, pulling one-handed donuts and bringing the final F1 demonstration of this remarkable 2019 Festival of Speed to a close.

All weekend the likes of Daniel Ricciardo, Lando Norris, Emerson Fittipaldi, Damon Hill and many more have acted as the perfect ambassadors for a sport we all clearly still love, despite a difficult couple of years. If you missed the action, we hope our F1 gallery can do the weekend justice. We already can’t wait to see what the F1 community can deliver in 2020.
