Oscar Piastri held off Charles Leclerc to win a thrilling Azerbaijan Grand Prix, in which a late collision between Sergio Pérez and Carlos Sainz Jr. enabled George Russell to pick up the pieces to take third.
There may have been a shadow over his first ever grand prix win in Hungary, but there was no doubt over Oscar Piastri being the deserved winner in Baku. A late lunge to overtake Charles Leclerc saw him take the lead on lap 20, and he was able to hold the Ferrari driver off to seal victory, Leclerc left rueing now a fourth visit to Azerbaijan where he has been unable to convert a pole position into a race win.
2023’s winner here, Sergio Pérez looked set for a much-needed podium finish, until a collision with Carlos Sainz Jr. on the penultimate lap ended both their races, much to the benefit of George Russell, who picked up an unexpected third place finish.
Lando Norris was on a salvage mission after getting caught out in qualifying to start 15th, but drove well to recover to sixth, which became a healthy fourth after the incident ahead. He set the fastest lap on his way, and crucially overtook his title rival Max Verstappen who finished fifth. McLaren have now overtaken Red Bull in the constructors’ championship with a 20-point lead. Verstappen’s lead at the top of the drivers’ championship remains a solid 59 points, though it's being chipped away at each week Verstappen continues to struggle.
Fernando Alonso achieved his best result since the Canadian Grand Prix with a sixth place finish, with Williams duo Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto – in his second F1 race – both scored points finishing seventh and eighth places respectively which see the team overtake Alpine in the constructor’s table.
The final points places were secured by Lewis Hamilton in ninth, and Oliver Bearman, who like Colapinto was competing in only his second F1 race. His tenth place finish earned him the unlikely honour of becoming the first driver to score points in his first two races for two different teams.
