There aren’t many races that have run at every single Goodwood Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, but the Gordon Spice Trophy is one of them. The race for Group 1 touring cars has been ever-present since its inaugural running in 2014 and remains a headline act on the schedule each year. It’s become a hugely important race on the global historic motorsport calendar, and some of the world’s biggest racing names have regularly attempted to join the esteemed roll of honour.

Most commonly a two-part race, the Gordon Spice Trophy, previously known as the Gerry Marshall Trophy, began as a competition between larger-capacity and smaller-capacity touring cars. Ford Capris and Chevrolet Camaros would face off against Mini 1275GTs and Triumph Dolomite Sprints, and in the early years it was the big-engined beasts that ran roughshod over their diminutive counterparts.
Chris Ward’s Rover SD1 was the car to beat at the 72nd, 73rd, 74th and 75th Members’ Meetings, seeing off the challenge of Capris and Camaros to claim five wins across the Sprint and Trophy races. He only missed out in 2015 because a retirement in the Sprint saw him forced to start from 23rd on the grid for the second race, although together with Chris Harris he’d managed to climb back up into second position when the chequered flag fell.

A year later saw the Rover SD1 return to the top step in both the Sprint and the Trophy race, with Stig Blomqvist then the team of Neel Jani and James Wood taking what remain to date the final victories for the SD1 in the Gordon Spice Trophy.

Jack Tetley followed with a great run of results across the 78th and 79th Members’ Meetings, when the Gordon Spice Trophy format was refreshed to split the full grid into two heats, one for the larger-engined cars and one for smaller, with both results combined to set the grid for an overall final. Tetley won the heat for the bigger cars before losing out to a remarkable effort from Jake Hill in the final. But he got his own back a year later, when the race returned to its original format, to win both the Sprint and the Trophy race alongside Alex Buncombe.

Touring car legend Rob Huff claimed a popular overall win when he took victory in the final of the 80th Members’ Meeting, while Goodwood regular and Mini master Nick Swift claimed his only Gordon Spice Trophy win in that year’s small-capacity heat.
