Gallery: S.F. Edge Trophy, the first race of SpeedWeek

16th October 2020
Laura Thomson

SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard has begun. The S.F. Edge Trophy is a spectacle to behold, with heaving Edwardian aero-engined automobiles taking on the high-speed Goodwood Motor Circuit.

To lend a little perspective, the newest car on this list is a huge 96 years young – that’s a Bugatti Type 13 'Brescia' driven by Margaret Diffey – while a 1903 Mercedes 60hp takes the geriatric crown.

The standout entry on the list, however, is Duncan Pittaway’s 1911 Fiat S76, aka The Beast of Turin. A Goodwood stalwart, the Beast features a ginormous 28.5-litre, inline-four, which spits flames as it accelerates and far outpowers its brakes. Also competing is a 1909 Benz 200HP ‘Blitzen Benz’ driven by Ben Collings, a 1905 Darracq 200hp and a 1912 Sunbeam 12/16.
