The Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy is often dubbed as the most beautiful race in the world, and it’s easy to understand why. Alongside Jaguar E-types there are cars such as the Ferrari 250GT SWB and Aston Martin DB4GT, plus AC Cobras, Austin Healey 300s and a lone Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. This was a time before aerodynamic devices — cars were made to be smooth, beautiful and that’s about it.
Another race with a driver list that reads like a who’s who of motorsport, Andrew Jordan took pole position in a Shelby Cobra. Further back in the field there was Tom Kristensen in a Ferrari 250 GT SWB, Emanuelle Pirro in an Austin-Healey 3000 Mk I, plus Dario Franchitti in a Shelby Cobra 260.
Oh, are we forgetting the 2008 Indy 500 winner and six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, behind the wheel of a Jaguar E-type? And what about seven-time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson, driving the AC Cobra Dragonsnake? The Goodwood Revival entry lists really are preposterous sometimes.
A 45-minute two-driver dash, the first few minutes of racing were frenetic, but sadly a red flag put the field-wide car-to-car battles on pause. When the race restarted, it was back to normal for everyone, with barely an inch between a number of cars up and down the field.
With ten minutes to go the heavens opened with absolutely no warning, throwing every finishing position up in the air. Who could keep control and who went sliding off the track and out of the race? Watch the full race here to see how it all unfolded…
