The Sussex Trophy has been a Goodwood Revival fixture ever since the event was inaugurated in 1998. Indeed, it was the opening race of that very first weekend. The late Robert Brooks has his place in history as the first ever Revival winner, and what a memorable victory it was.

Brooks’ ex-Graham Hill Lotus 15 was brushed by the Lister-Jaguar of Frank Sytner, but despite the Lister’s greater power, Brooks kept Sytner honest, bodywork flailing from his car after that startline contact. A race-long duel ended in Brooks’ favour, and it set the tone for the close competition that has characterised Goodwood ever since.
In the subsequent years since, the Sussex Trophy has on occasion run as a two-driver race. Tony Dron scored three wins in as many consecutive years in the early part of the new millennium, while James Cottingham and Oliver Bryant have scored numerous wins between in more recent editions.
As for machinery, either a British or Italian car has won every Sussex Trophy — all besides one occasion in 2012, when Julian Majzub brought the American Sadler across the line first.
