It takes a special kind of person to race a 1930s Grand Prix car, which is why we have such a deep appreciation for the skills of those who have competed in the Goodwood Trophy over the years.

The Revival is the world’s most immersive historic motorsport event, and its races like this that help to create such an authentic and captivating atmosphere. The Goodwood Trophy is particularly significant; it represents the first ever Formula 1 race held here at the Motor Circuit during the inaugural race meeting back in 1948.
Each year, we have the chance to remember a time when motorsport was just beginning to re-emerge in post-war Britain, and Goodwood was at the centre of F1’s establishment as a global phenomenon.
Fittingly, the Goodwood Trophy was the opening race on the schedule for the first Revival in 1998, and it was won in exciting fashion by Ludovic Lindsay at the wheel of the ERA B-Type R5B ‘Remus’.
Lindsay, together with ‘Remus’, went on to become a five-time winner of the event, taking further victories in 2000, ‘05, ‘08 and ‘09.
ERA has been the most successful marque throughout the Goodwood Trophy’s Revival era, with further victories in the hands of Barrie Williams, John Ure, Mark Gillies, J.Mac Hulbert, David Morris and Michael Gans.
Williams became a three-time winner thanks to further victories with a Connaught A-Type, but Gillies stands alone as a record eight-time winner, all of them at the wheel of the ERA A-Type R3A.
Alta and Maserati have also seen winning representation over the years. Stefan Schollwoeck claimed a first Goodwood Trophy triumph for the Italian marque in 2006 with a Maserati 6CM, an achievement managed twice more by Calum Lockie in 2016 and ‘18.
Gareth Burnett and Ian Baxter have both flown the flag for Alta in recent times, Burnett first with the 2-litre Single Seater in 2019, and then Baxter twice back-to-back with the Alta 61 IS in 2023 and ‘24.
The Goodwood Trophy remains a deeply significant event at the Revival, it’s an opportunity for us all to experience the very beginnings of the historic Motor Circuit, and we can’t wait to watch a field of pre- and post-war Grand Prix cars emerge for another run in 2026.
