Previous winners of the Chichester Cup

The competition on show in the Chichester Cup means it’s no surprise that this has been a regular fixture in the Goodwood Revival race schedule since the first event in 1998. This 20-minute race shows Formula Junior cars at their best, though there is certainly one manufacturer that has had the most success across the two decades we’ve enjoyed seeing them compete at the Motor Circuit.

In early renditions, the Chichester Cup was won by a Ford-powered Lotus on four of the first five occasions. A Lotus 20 took the inaugural victory with Jean-Michel Farine in ’98, and a 20 won again in 2001, with Michael Hubbard. Martin Walford became the first multiple-time Champion with his Lotus 22, winning both in 1999 and 2001. Only the Elva-BMC 100 of Ian Scott could shake things up with a win in 2000.

Lotus dominance wasn’t to continue, though. From 2003-2013, there was only one driver and car pairing that won the Chichester Cup more than once, as we experienced a decade of varied victors. That was 2003’s winner, Robin Longdon, who, with a Lotus-Ford Mk2, also won in 2006. In the remaining years the title was won by drivers with a range of machinery, including a Caravelle-Ford MKIII (’04), a Lotus 22 (’05) and a Gemini-Ford Mk3A (’07). Terrier (’09), Elva (’10, ‘13), Cooper (’11) and Stanguellini (’12) were also all represented, while Hibberd became a two-time Champion in 2008 with a Lotus 27.

Having been contested at each Revival to that point, the Chichester Cup became more sporadic in its appearances after 2014. Lola cars achieved back-to-back wins in ’14 and ’16 with David Methley and Andrew Hibbard respectively. Hibbard won again in 2018 and 2022, on those occasions with a Lotus 22, to become the most successful driver in Revival-era Chichester Cup history. The Alexis-Ford Mk3 interrupted Hibbard’s run when he triumphed in 2017, while the most recent Lola victory was achieved in 2021 by Pedro de la Roche.

Stuart Roach is the defending Champion of this contest, his 2025 win aboard an Alexis-Ford Mk2 added to the success he previously achieved in a Mk3 model in 2017. Last time out the top five finishers made for pretty diverse reading, with not a single Lotus in sight. We’re looking forward to seeing how things play out in the 2026 Chichester Cup.
