For the first time ever, the Sussex Trophy became a two-driver race at the 2026 Goodwood Revival. And, as historic motor racing enthusiasts know, a lot can happen in 45 minutes — especially when you throw in a mixture of professional and amateur drivers.

As Saturday’s final race, there was also variable lighting and a smattering of rain to help mix things up. With battles throughout the field, the elongated Sussex Trophy promised plenty of drama as these sports racing and prototypes from the late 1950s engage in battle.

Sussex Trophy Official Practice 

A dramatic red flag brought an abrupt pause to the action during a high-stakes Sussex Trophy Official Practice session. The stoppage was triggered by a major collision between the Lotus-Climax 15 of Michael Birch and Luke Stevens and the Lister-Jaguar 'Costin' driven by Justin Bell and Mark Donnor.

The impact was severe enough to rip the nose of the Lister-Jaguar Costin completely off the car, leaving it laying upside down on the track while its engine sat fully exposed on a nearby grass bank. Before the chaos halted running, spectators were treated to a spectacular sight as Nick Jarvis pushed his Lister-Chevrolet 'Costin' to the limit, sending bright flames spitting from its exhausts. 

Amidst the fierce competition and dramatic incidents, it was the dynamic duo of Bonamy Grimes and Johnny Mowlem who truly excelled, asserting their dominance by leading the pack in their swift Lotus-Climax 15.

When is the 2026 Sussex Trophy? 

These period racing masterpieces will take to the track for the first time for an Official Practice on Friday at 14:20. Eager spectators won’t have to wait long for the race to commence, as the Sussex Trophy will close out Saturday’s racing calendar, with the flag dropping at 17:25.

Who’s competing in the 2026 Sussex Trophy? 

Taking to the track for the Sussex Trophy are some of Goodwood’s finest, including Tom Kristensen, Gordon Shedden, Chris Harris, Colin Turkington, Bonamy Grimes, Johnny Mowlem, Alex Brundle, Nick Jarvis and Marino Franchitti. Joining this star-studded line-up are some previous winners hungry for the podium once again, including Chris Ward, James Cottingham, Sam Hancock and Gary Pearson.

Which cars are competing in the 2026 Sussex Trophy? 

The prestige of the driver line-up is perfectly mirrored by the legendary machinery taking to the track for this year’s Sussex Trophy. The grid welcomes back some of the race’s most decorated champions, including the three-time winning Jaguar D-Type ‘Long-nose’, the five-time winning Lotus-Climax 15 and another five-time victor, the Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly’. Racing alongside these historic podium-sitters is the iconic Maserati Tipo 61 ‘Birdcage’ — a giant of motorsport that is uniquely suited to this year's Revival as part of the official Maserati Celebrations.
