St. Mary’s Trophy Part 2 highlights

You can always rely on the St. Mary’s Trophy to deliver close, thrilling racing and the 2026 running was no exception. The professional drivers competed on day one of the Goodwood Revival, and on Sunday it was the turn of the owners. 

An all-Ford front row consisted of the Galaxie 500 of Fred Shepherd and the Lotus Cortinas of Max Chilton and Nick Sampson. Could the nimbler cars overcome the power of the big American V8?

St. Mary’s Trophy Part 2 Official Practice

Part 2 of the St. Mary’s Trophy is the chance for the owners of the 1960s saloon cars to take to Goodwood Motor Circuit, picking up from where the pros left off the day before. With similarly dry track conditions, they no doubt all benefitted from some guidance from their team-mates.

The top of the timesheets was dominated by Fred Shepherd’s Ford Galaxie 500 and the Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1 of Max Chilton (who is both the car’s owner and a former Formula 1 driver). Shepherd put himself at the top of the leaderboard, leaving Chilton to try to topple him. At one stage, he came within 0.2 second of the Galaxie’s time, but Shepherd ultimately opened the gap to 0.6 seconds.

Chilton’s drive was enlivened with some sideways action as he carved through traffic, and he’ll no doubt be hoping to get off the front row of the grid cleanly tomorrow in to try to keep the larger Ford in his mirror. Whatever happens, we’re in for a classic battle between the power of the Galaxie and the agility of the Lotus.

St. Mary’s Trophy Part 1 highlights

With Romain Dumas on pole, lining up alongside Frank Stippler in second and Jenson Button in third, the opening lap of Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy was bound to be good. But with drivers from Formula 1, Formula E, IndyCar, NASCAR, sportscars and touring cars forming up behind, you won’t be surprised to hear this race was a perfect start to the racing action at the 2026 Revival. The Goodwood box office is open for action, and after this, we’re expecting blockbuster after blockbuster all weekend long.

St. Mary’s Trophy Part 1 Official Practice

Opening the weekend’s escapades, the first Official Practice session for the St. Mary’s Trophy reflects an excellent breadth of representation of the period, from a Morris Mini Cooper S and a Mk1 Ford Lotus Cortina to a Plymouth Barracuda and a Ford Galaxie 500. The phrase ‘David and Goliath’ feels a little overused, but it does neatly summarise how different some of the cars are.

As practice got underway, one racer taking to the Motor Circuit for the very first time was António Félix da Costa, currently racing for Jaguar TCS Racing in Formula E, which is why his first adventure on track at the Revival is behind the wheel of a beautiful 1961 Jaguar Mk2. 

Clearly, da Costa didn’t need long to get to grips with either the car or the track. Though his best time was seven seconds off the top time, securing 25^th place out of 30 entrants, he was seven tenths of a second up on the other Mk2 Jaguar of James Dorlin.

Sadly, proceedings weren’t in any way smooth for Alex Brundle. Just three minutes into the session his Morris Mini Cooper S slowed to a halt just short of the pitlane, resulting in the first red flag of the weekend.

While 2009 Formula 1 Champion Jenson Button and his Lotus Cortina Mk1 topped the timing sheets for the entire session, final lap heroics from Romain Dumas and Frank Stippler in their respective Ford Galaxie 500s and Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTAs relegated him to third.

When is the 2026 St. Mary’s Trophy

As a two-part race, the St. Mary’s Trophy spans across the Revival timetable. Official Practice for Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy is set for 09:30 on Friday morning, with Part 1 of the race scheduled for 17:35 that afternoon, the first contest of the event. After this jam-packed day of saloon car racing, a second Official Practice session will take place on Saturday at 12:10, ahead of Part 2 of the race on Sunday, at 13:15.

Who’s competing in the 2026 St. Mary’s Trophy

The St. Mary’s Trophy boasts one of the most star-studded line-ups of the entire Goodwood Revival. This year’s grid brings together a spectacular mix of motorsport legends, including Jimmie Johnson, Tom Ingram, Colin Turkington, David Brabham, André Lotterer, Jenson Button, Rob Huff, Gordon Shedden, Romain Dumas, Chris Buncombe, Dario Franchitti, Karun Chandhok, Hélio Castroneves and Andy Priaulx. This is a race you truly cannot afford to miss.

Which cars are racing in the 2026 St. Mary’s Trophy

We’re welcoming some returning marques for this year’s race, including some previous winners. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA and Ford Galaxie 500 are back and ready to fight for their podium spot once again, while some of the less decorated but equally as remarkable names include the Ford-Lotus Cortina Mk I, Morris Mini Cooper S and the one and only Plymouth Barracuda. The perfect homage to the original race, and just another reason why we love the Goodwood Revival.
