The Goodwood Trophy delivered an unforgettable afternoon of historic racing as machines of a pioneering Formula 1 era fought tooth and nail for the circuit's original prize. The drama unfolded immediately as drivers pushed their legendary pre-war machinery to the absolute limit. Spectators were treated to heart-stopping moments of car control, with racers brilliantly wrestling their cars to save dramatic near-misses. However, the gruelling nature of the circuit took its toll, forcing several iconic cars out of the running with sudden mechanical failures and off-track excursions.

As the clock ticked down, breathtaking slipstream battles saw multiple cars racing abreast down the pit straight, culminating in an extraordinary, final-lap scrap for the top spot. It was a true masterclass in historic racing, leaving the crowd completely captivated by a thrilling display of respect and edge-of-the-seat racing from start to finish…

Goodwood Trophy Official Practice 

The paddock was pushed to its limits during a dramatic qualifying session for the Goodwood Trophy, where Formula 1 pioneers fought fiercely for Goodwood’s original prize. Mechanical reliability proved to be the ultimate adversary on the track. 

The drama began with 15 minutes left on the clock when Richard Bradley was forced off the circuit as his Maserati 4CL billowed a massive cloud of smoke from a sudden engine issue. Shortly after, he was joined on the sidelines by driver Heinz Bachmann, whose ERA B-type R9B suffered a nearly identical, smoke-filled fate. The mechanical curse struck once more when the Bugatti T51 of Alex Read ended up perched helplessly on the grass with another engine failure, requiring the marshals to wheel it off the track. 

Amidst the chaos, past victors rose to the occasion. Eight-time winner Mark Gillies showcased his incredible skill in the ERA A-type R3A, steadily climbing from second place to snatch pole. With Ian Baxter joining him at the sharp end, the front row of the grid holds a staggering ten wins between them, setting up a masterclass in historic motor racing.

When is the 2026 Goodwood Trophy?

These historic Grand Prix machines are set to hit the track for Official Practice at 13:20 on Friday, giving spectators a roaring early morning dose of nostalgia. The Goodwood Trophy then takes the spotlight on Saturday afternoon, with the flag set to drop at 15:35.

This year’s Goodwood Trophy features a stellar line-up of returning maestros eager to add another prestigious trophy to their mantlepieces. Grid veterans and multiple-time winners Mark Gillies and Ludovic Lindsay bring a wealth of experience and past victories to the Motor Circuit, both hungry to dominate the field once more.

Much like the driver line-up, the machinery in this year's pack features plenty of proven racing pedigree. Dominant pre-war and post-war marques like ERA, including the legendary B-Type 'Remus', Maserati, and Alta are all returning to the grid with past victories under their belts, while a stunning Alfa Romeo P3 will be an extraordinary sight as it challenges the established field.
