Look, it’s a Denza B5 on the Hill at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard! But what’s a Denza B5, we hear you ask? It’s BYD’s response to the Defender.
Denza is a new brand in the UK, one that sits under the BYD umbrella and is sold as a Bao in China. This car is the Denza B5, sold in China as the Bao 5, and it’s a curious thing, powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor at each axle. That’s not all that unusual, but the total power output is a whopping 677PS (490kW) and 760Nm (561lb ft) of torque. Say what?
To give this all-wheel-drive hot SUV a bit of perspective, a V8 powered Defender Octa, with its twin-turbo V8 engine, kicks out ‘only 635PS (467kW) and 750Nm (553lb ft).
When is it coming to the UK? That we’re not sure yet, but we’re curious to spend a little more time looking over the course of the Festival of Speed.
