The BMW M2 CS is the latest in a line of M cars with the wick turned up, a dynasty that started with the E46 M3 at the end of its life in 2005. The newcomer packs an enormous punch in its small two-door body – 533PS (392kW) to be precise.
It’s the same engine employed by the M4 GT3 Evo, and features a lot of motorsport-derived technology to boost durability as much as power. A forged crank, rigid crankcase, iron-coated cylinder bores... it’s all there. Sadly, a huge jump in torque for the S58 3.0-litre six-cylinder precludes the option of a manual; it’s 8-speed paddleshift automatic or nothing.
Visually, the M2 CS gains a ducktail spoiler which, together with the blacked-out colour scheme of the car on the Hill, adds to its brutalist appearance. Subtle, it’s not – but it has the performance to cash the cheques written by the looks. The 0-62mph jaunt takes 3.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 188mph.
The punchy two-door made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, where event-goers had the chance to see the M2 CS in action for the first time, and you can relive its potent ascent of the Hill in the video above.
