Aston Martin’s modern Volante models have never been about outright speed. For sure they’ve been fast — think DB9 Volante, DB11 Volante, DBS Volante, Vanquish Volante — but they’re more about enjoying speed and performance with the roof down, rather than any sort of hardcore open-top experience. That being said, the DB12 Volante we see here really isn’t hanging around.
This is the DB12 Volante’s first visit to the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, lining up in the paddocks alongside the new Vanquish Volante to make 60 years of Aston Martin Volante models. The first was a 1965 Short Chassis Volante, a design halfway house between the convertible DB5 before it and the DB6 after, of which only 37 were made.
Also on the Hill this weekend is the new Vantage S, DBX S and Valhalla, the latter Aston Martin’s on-paper rival to the Ferrari F80.
The DB12 Volante might not have a sonorous V12 like the old DB9 Volante, but as you can hear it still has a rather lovely 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Considering the DB12 Volante is an open top cruiser, 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds is rather spicy.
