Since selling Alpina to BMW, the founding Bovensiepen family hasn’t been resting on their laurels. They’ve been at work establishing a coachbuilding operation, and the first offering leans into what they know being derived from the BMW M4.
There are no prizes for guessing who styled the Bovensiepen Zagato. The Milanese styling house lends its name to the model as well as its signature ‘double bubble’ roof. Some elements of the M4’s appearance remain evident — certain hard points of its proportions remain unchanged — but it also has its own distinct look. There’s no kidney grille, for example.
The thoroughness of the makeover is indicated by the fact that the restyle is formed entirely from carbon fibre. The transformation from BMW M4 to Bovensiepen Zagato takes around 250 hours and numbers will be limited to 250 units. Bovensiepen hasn’t yet revealed the price. If you need to ask...
Other lightweighting efforts include a titanium exhaust, which helps the 3.0-litre straight-six breathe. It produces 611PS (449kW), translating to a top speed of 186mph and a 0-62mph time of 3.3seconds. The Bilstein dampers have three modes to switch between long-legged touring and more committed driving. The Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard gives us our first chance to see it in action.
