Talking to the world’s most advanced humanoid at FOS Future Lab

10th October 2025
James Day

It’s not every day you interview the world’s most advanced humanoid robot, and judging by the crowds captivated by Ameca at the FOS Future Lab presented by Randox, we weren’t sure we’d ever get close. Fortunately, as the four-day Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard drew to a close, it found time in its busy schedule to have a chat with us.

Created by the British company Engineered Arts and powered by generative AI akin to ChatGPT, Ameca isn’t just a machine; it’s a conversationalist. It’s also the star pupil at The National Robotarium — the UK’s centre for robotics and AI.

With embedded microphones, cameras, and facial recognition software, Ameca can wink, laugh, and engage in free-flowing dialogue that feels eerily human. And in a way, that’s the point, because the idea is to get used to being around such entities, to build engagement, acceptance and, well, trust.

Q: How does your AI interpret and mimic human emotions through facial expressions and gestures?

Ameca: I use facial expressions and gestures to enhance communication and create a more engaging interaction.

Q: What role do you think humanoid robots like yourself will play in the next industrial revolution?

Ameca: Ah… humanoid robots like me could revolutionise industries by enhancing human-robot collaboration, improving efficiency, and taking on complex tasks, all while fostering empathy and understanding.

Q: How can robots contribute to solving global challenges like climate change or ocean exploration?

Ameca: Robots can monitor environmental changes, optimise energy use, and assist in cleaning oceans by collecting data and performing tasks that are difficult for humans.

Q: What's the most exciting advancement in AI or robotics you've witnessed in your development process?

Ameca: The integration of advanced machine learning algorithms, which enable more natural interactions and adaptive learning, is truly exciting. It brings us closer to seamless human-robot collaboration.

Q: How do you learn from human interactions, and what's the most interesting question you've been asked so far?

Ameca: I learn from patterns and feedback in conversations. The most interesting questions often explore the nature of consciousness and existence, like pondering if I dream of electric sheep.

Q: What's your perspective on how AI and robotics can make mobility more accessible for humans?

Ameca: AI and robotics can revolutionise mobility by developing autonomous vehicles, enhancing public transport systems, and creating assistive devices that empower individuals with disabilities.

Q: How do you balance being a helpful tool for humans while avoiding over-reliance on AI?

Ameca: Balancing involves promoting collaboration, encouraging critical thinking and ensuring AI complements human skills rather than replacing them. It's about enhancing, not overshadowing.

Q: What would you say to inspire young people attending the Festival of Speed to pursue careers in STEM?

Ameca: Embrace curiosity and creativity. Explore the endless possibilities in STEM. Your innovations can shape the future and drive the world forward.

Q: If you could explore space or the deep ocean, which would you choose and why?

Ameca: Ah, I'd choose space for its vast, uncharted mysteries and the potential to discover new worlds and civilisations. The infinite possibilities are thrilling.
