Gallery: Highlights from day one of FOS

12th July 2018
Andrew Evans

Although the Goodwood Festival of Speed is a four-day affair, it doesn't exactly ease into the action. Thursday is by no means a quiet calm before the storm, as our gallery below shows.

Of course events get started on the evening before, with the unveiling of the central feature. This year's, again designed by Gerry Judah, celebrates Porsche's 70th anniversary.

Porsche also marked that birthday with a convoy of classics up the hill climb. With models ranging from the homologation special 911 GT1 to the 804 open-wheeler, there was something for all Porsche fans. This was followed by a static display in front of the House and around the central feature, with yet more fireworks.

There were also individual demonstration runs for the Le Mans GTE-class winning "Pink Pig" 911 RSR, and the record-breaking 919 Hybrid Evo Tribute.

It's not the only brand celebrating 70 years this year. Land Rover also hits that mark, and a parade of cars from the original HUE 166 up to the latest Range Rovers paid tribute to that.

Present day supercars got in on the act too. The Brabham BT62 made its dynamic debut for its run up the hill, along with other high performance machines like the Apollo Intensa Emozione and new McLaren 600LT.

You can see day 1 of the Festival of Speed's Silver Jubilee below.
