The Timed Shoot-Out is the climax of the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, when drivers make it their mission to set the fastest times of the weekend on the Goodwood Hill.

The climax of the 2026 Festival of Speed got underway in intense heat, which only added to the pressure on these drivers who were each about to throw caution to the wind in the Timed Shoot-Out.
With cars ranging from the 107 Mercedes 120hp to the very latest Gen4 Formula E racer, this year’s event showcased the broadest array of automotive machinery we’ve ever seen in Goodwood’s most famous competition.
It began with the pre-war monsters, Duncan Pittaway in his 28.4-litre Fiat 76 ‘Beast of Turin’ set a benchmark of 80.08 seconds for the rest of the field to chase. It didn’t take long for Archie Collings in his Mercedes 120hp to best him by just eight thousandths of a second, and from there the times kept on tumbling.
From pre-war to the present day, the Production Road Car class saw the very latest creations from Bentley, Ferrari, TWR and Gunther Werks, showcasing the capabilities of modern technology to bring the times down into the 50s.
British Touring Car Champion Jake Hill looked lively in the Nissan 300ZX Turbo to break into the 40s with a 48.48 before Johnny Cecotto suffered an unfortunate incident into Molecomb which brought proceedings to a halt as his stricken BMW M3 DTM E92 was extricated by the straw bales.
George Krass in the V8 Chevrolet Corvette C5.R got things back underway with a tricky run on an incredibly dusty course, and he was followed by the similarly potent Ford Mustang GTS-1.

At the half-way stage, the standings were incredibly tight, with five cars in the mid-pack separated by less than a second. Florent Moulin completed the trio of big American racers, tucking in behind Hill with a time of 48.68.
The real business began with the purpose built hillclimb machines bred for Pikes Peak, and yet the Renault R.S. 01 monster couldn’t match the effort of Hill. It wasn’t until Travis Pastrana took to the Hill in his fan-favourite Brataroo that the 300 ZX Turbo was finally knocked from the top of the pile.
Rallycross legend Johan Kristoffersson sent us all to the edge of our seats when he ran a full two wheels on the grass out of the first corner, and he got the better of Pastrana with a dramatic run of 46.31. The man in the Brat couldn’t hide his disappointment.

The Contemporary GTs were next, but they struggled on the increasingly slippery Hill and had to settle for the middle of the pack, as Callum Voisin in the Porsche 911 Cup managed to top the class with a 48.68.
A cult hero was next up, the BMW M3 Touring 24H, and Jordan Pepper left very little on the table as he powered past the Flint Wall. But it was Alex Summers who found the limit in his Shadow DN4, the experience hillclimb specialist completed an incredible run in 42.46.
That left the two main protagonists, Dan Ticktum and four-time Shoot-Out winner Romain Dumas to battle for the overall victory. Ticktum in the newly launched Formula E Gen4 went first, and set a target of 42.46 for Dumas to beat.
The Festival of Speed veteran accepted the challenge and made it three in a row for him and Ford, as he took the Super Mustang Mach-E to the top of the Hill in 41.97.

We’ve just had our clearest indication of how Sunday afternoon’s Timed Shoot-Out may take shape with the qualifying session. Two out of the top three slots are occupied by electric vehicles, with four-time winner Romain Dumas setting the fastest time of 42.99 seconds with the Ford Super Mustang Mach-E.
It’s little surprise that the fast Ford has coped admirably with heat and the dust of West Sussex given that Dumas won Pikes Peak with the same car earlier this year. He reckons he has extracted as much as the car has to give; speaking of his chances tomorrow, he said “I can’t gain a lot.”

His closest rival is Formula E Champion Daniel Ticktum. Using a Jaguar Gen4 Prototype Formula E car, he posted a time of 43.87 seconds. Like Dumas, Ticktum also says he gave it his all in qualifying. “At turn two, there’s so much dust I was losing time on the exit,” he told Goodwood’s Ed Foster at the top of the Hill. “I don’t know how much more there is from me.”
Our top three is completed by the fastest of the ICE cars. Fresh from its class victory at the Nürburgring, the BMW M3 Touring 24H posted a time of 46.33 seconds in the hands of GT racer Jordan Pepper.
Given the dry weather forecast, the dust will continue to pose a challenge for the official Timed Shoot-Out tomorrow afternoon, but it will also provide plenty of heat for tyres and give drivers the confidence to cut corners. One thing’s for sure, that laser focus will be back for all those at the sharp end hoping to chalk up a victory at the 2026 Festival of Speed.
2026 Festival of Speed
Friday starts things off with a 45-minute Official Practice session at 14:05, during which there will be a live review of the session over at the FOZ Fan Zone presented by Pirelli. On Saturday, Qualifying will take place on the Hill at 14:50, accompanied by another live discussion at the FOS Fan Zone.
The main event will take place on Sunday, with battle for overall victory commencing at 14:55. The driver who sets the fastest time on the Hill will be crowned the winner and welcomed to the balcony of Goodwood House in celebration of their achievement at the end of the session.
A huge list of drivers are confirmed for this year’s Timed Shoot-Out, from famous names in the world of historic racing such as Ben Collings, Julian Majzub and Duncan Pittaway, to Travis Pastrana, BTCC Champion Jake Hill and WRC great Sébastien Loeb.
Goodwood House Captains, Dario Franchitti and Gordon Shedden will also be vying to set the fastest time on the Hill, but the man to beat remains Romain Dumas, who returns this year looking for his fifth victory in the Timed Shoot-Out.
