It has become a tired cliché that to be a true car enthusiast you need to own an Alfa Romeo at least once in your life. Whether you agree with that trope or not, you can’t deny that the Milanese firm has had more than its fair share of hits.
You could argue that even choosing an Alfa Romeo Junior over its Stellantis stablemates probably says something about an owner’s priorities as a car enthusiast. We’re probably all agreed, though, that for a true fanatic's credentials it’s Alfa Romeo’s back catalogue that signals true automotive admiration.
A cohort that would agree with that conclusion arrived at the most recent Goodwood Breakfast Club. The first Sunday of August meant Classic Sunday here at the Motor Circuit, and paddock one was taken over by an array of machines wearing that famous serpentine badge.
As you might predict, Giulias were most numerous but the number didn’t diminish their impact as one of the most desirable classic saloons. Whether in standard road trim or pumped up for competition with widened wheelarches and a suitable livery, each one looked perfect framed in the wooden paddock shelters. They were kept honest by their forebears, while for a moment our eyes were only on the Montreal, Alfa Romeo’s V8-powered GT contender from the 1970s.
It was a timely moment to see the Goodwood paddocks ringing to the sound of Alfa Romeos, as next month’s Revival will celebrate three significant anniversaries for the marque. It is 100 years since Alfa Romeo won the World Championship for Manufacturers with its dominant P2 Grand Prix car.
Twenty-five years later, the team walked away with the first ever Formula 1 World Championship having won every race, barring the Indianapolis Grand Prix that it didn’t enter (along with every other team that may have been a contender for the inaugural F1 title). Fast-forward another quarter of a century, and Alfa Romeo was asserting its dominance on the World Sports Car Championship.
All three milestone victories will be marked at the 2025 Goodwood Revival — and you don’t need to own an Alfa Romeo to appreciate every second.
Tickets for the Goodwood Revival are limited! Saturday tickets have sold out, so secure your Friday and Sunday tickets to avoid missing out on the world's best historic motorsport event.
